What happens to insurance companies and their employees if universal health care passes?

Do liberal's hearts not bleed for the families who's bread winners won't have jobs, because they used to work for an evil insurance company that tried to make "profits" (how dare they), and is now out of business because the government now performs their service for free?

So if the insurance companies will still do all of the work, and will insure all of the people in this country, and the government will force them to pay 100% of everything the doctor bills, who in the world is going to pay for this? It alone would have to be the single largest tax hike in history. The cost of implementing something like that is not even fathomable.

It won't matter. Doctors will not work for a garbage man's pay. We will have no health care period.

I suggest if we pass universal health care, invest your money in a nice spot in the cemetery and a tombstone.

(for those that say it worked in other countries: our education system is very tough, the time it takes for a student to become a doctor is VERY long and the education is VERY expensive.)

edit: so far I see the response is: It will create a bureaucracy. Yep, that's what we need, another agency to lose our paperwork.

Furthermore, what you are calling "working through insurance companies" is called nationalization of an industry.

There would be plenty of jobs to be filled under the new 'Universal Health Plan' whatever that is. If they couldn't find a job right away, at least they wouldn't have to worry about how they're going to pay for health care.

My heart would not bleed for the corporate execs or the share holders.

They'll have gauranteed proffits, rather like a regulated utility, rather than depending on the vaugeries of the market, while the government picks up the tab for anyone it's not proffitable to insure - at least, that's how most of the plans floated would probably have shaken out.

Companies get to actually compete in the world market unfettered by insurance costs and the public gets to have health insurance that makes sense.

If you look at Massachusett's implemented universal health care provider (supported by Prez candidate and Republican Romney), you will see that it actually created more insurance jobs by mandated more people be insured. It used a creative mix of market, insurance, employer, and state funds to create this system.

What is important is to remember that policies can be creatively designed.

So who do you think will be administering this healthcare? DUH...the insurance companies. It's doubtful anyone would lose their job. Who do you think administors Medicare and Medicaid? Insurance companies. They hold the federal contracts, they are called the fiscal intermediary. They are not civil servants, they private insurance companies. Why don't you do your homework before you go casting accusations about things you know nothing about.

Once again....universal health care isn't "free".

Quite the contrary--the insurance companies are the vehicles through which the government will implement insurance coverage, so their membership and premiums paid in will increase.
Universal health coverage will insure their corporate success.
