My friend is pregnant again after having a healthy baby boy almost 5 years ago and 3 years later, she had another baby boy who died a month after he was born due to a heart defect. In the 2 years since, she has had 2 miscarriages...all in the first trimester. She is pregnant again and is about to enter the second trimester in a matter of days. So far, everything looks fine. She went to the doctor the other day and heard the heartbeat. Is she safe when she enters the fourth month or is there still a chance of another miscarriage?

I want to say that everything should be fine, but without her medical records I can not be certain. For most women passing the first trimester is a big relief because it usually does give a safety net, however with that being said, she does appear to have a history of miscarriage, so if nothing else just to be on the safe side I would take it easy more then usual. I know this stinks, especially when you see these pregnant women running around doing things like they're free & your stuck in a bed with a magazine.. :) but trust me, it is all completely worth it in the end. It is possible to have late miscarriages, though rare. 24 weeks is when the babies chances start to increase even if she did happen to deliver. I had a perfectly normal pregnancy with my daughter & 3 years later got pregnant again, & ended up going into labor at 18 weeks & we lost our son. My aunt, also on her second pregnancy lost a daughter at 7 months. But like I said this is rare, but you should tell her to still be careful, & if she has any concerns never be afraid to ask her doc, reguardless of what time it is.. that's what his job is!! Especially with her circumtance I'm sure they will be very understanding. so I wish her the best of luck & I'm sure she will deliver a perfect healthy baby!!

Well, theres always a chance something could go wrong, but they say that the chances drop dramatically after the first trimester is over. They usually consider you in the clear after the third month.

From what I read your chances of miscarriage drop 50 percent after 12 weeks. And the chances are extremely rare after 20 weeks. Although I think after 20 they are called still births.

Risk of miscarriages drops to 1% after 13th week and listening to the heartbeat. Although you can still lose the baby at anytime during pregnancy.

If she has had miscarriages before there is sitll a chance that she still can miscarriage, Tell her to take it easy at least until seven months by then the chance for the baby's survival is great.

There is always a chance for miscarriage but the chance decreases dramatically once you get past the magical 13 week point. Hope everything goes well for your friend.

She should be alright. Once you pass the third month mark your not in the "danger" zone so to speak anymore. But, at any course of a pregnancy problems can arise.
