you can definitely learn at home. you've got to start learning how to do a back walkover.

or technically a back bend. if you can't immediately just bend over and land on your hands and stay up, then start on the floor, and raise yourself up and try and kick your legs over your head.
then try to learn to just bend over and land on your hands and kick your legs over, make sure your legs are straight otherwise you'll be off balance and fall over.
once you master that, and i mean can do it anytime anywhere, start doing cartwheels and roundoffs and figure out what would be the most comfortable way for you to flip backwards.
i suggest you invest in some wrist splints while you're practicing, it's a ***** until you get it right. and then you just keep practicing, keep your momentum to flip you over.

don't give up!!

For a handspring, go to lessons. A lot of beginners have bad form and wind up landing all their weight plus their jumping momentum on their necks and spine. If you are on a soft trampoline and supported by a trained spotter, your chances of hurting yourself are drastically reduced.

The back walkover is all about flexibility. The handspring is about power. They look similar but really do not have a lot to do with each other. If you want some drills you can do at home in conjunction with your classes, try these: http://www.geocities.com/aescougarcheer/basics.htm#td

Yeah, you can learn to do back walkovers/backbends by yourself...but it's probably not that great of an idea. Without a spotter, you could get seriously hurt. It's best to learn tumbling from someone who has experience and can keep you from injuring yourself.

I would recommend learning...

A Back Bend: So you can get your back into the habit of going into an arch

A Back Walk Over: So you can get into the habit of arching your back but as well as kicking your legs over

A Pushup: I would do about 30 a day. So you can get the upper body strength as well as the strength in your rists.
