Anything that you love, you can love forever. Or put it differently: anything you truly love, you'll love forever whether you choose to or not. If it's really love, you'll love that person, animal or thing (sometimes passionately, desperately, insert adverb of choice), period, whether or not you can manage to keep them or save them.
I love my son and though I know he loves me too, I cannot know for sure whether he'll still want to be around me when he's grown. I loved my mother and she got sick and died anyway--doesn't change how much I love her. I love my friend who's going through a nasty divorce, and there's not very much I can do to help her other than be on the other end of the phone line when she needs me.
Wow, I seem to be giving love a rather negative image here, which I did not intend to do. Even if relationships turn out badly, people/animals pass out of our lives and can't be replaced, etc., the love we felt and still feel for them does not go away, and helps shape us for better or for worse as humans. It's up to each of us to figure out how to use that love to learn something about ourselves and to move forward. Much, much easier said than done. But I truly think that people who never risk love lead impoverished lives, and I wouldn't trade places.

That all depends on whether we live forever. If we live forever, then we can love God forever and all those with whom we share eternity.
