We need more tourist attractions, it's as simple as that. Detroits weather, although cold in the winter, is not terrible. We have no natural disasters and the state has miles and miles of coastline. Right now they are building the RiverWalk and hopefully stores will open around it and it could eventually end up like the one in San Antonio.

Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit, I have to say, the city has always had a bad rep. It's high crime and murders aren't enticing for tourists. And really, Detroit doesn't have that much to offer if you did clean the city up. The casino's suck. A few years ago, while home visiting, my dad took me and my husband to the MGM Grand Casino. The place was a total joke! Sure, it was nice, but the MINIMUM bid on a table was $50!! Screw that! I'd rather visit Vegas and spend $5 on a table!
Anyways, the city needs to be cleaned up first, then, find a good attraction or several, that would entice more people to want to visit.

I live in Detroit, having just bought my first home there (we'll discuss property values at a later date..). I made a conscious decision to buy within the city even though, right now, it is not considered one of the best places in the Metro Area to live. But, I'm bringing my income and tax base into the city, which is something it needs. We can build amusement parks and fancy hotels and shopping centers, but unless people feel safe to go to the city (which a lot of people right now don't), you're not going to lure anyone in. What it takes is for people to start moving back into the city, to start contributing more to the city and for businesses to start calling Detroit their home. The more money the city can pull in, the more police officers, firefighters, schools, etc. they can have. And then Detroit will start getting better and people will start feeling safer and more people will come. Then you can build the amusement park.
Also, a great mass transit system would help. But, again, you need $$$ for that...

85% of the population of Detroit are Blacks. There needs to be more segregation. According to the 2000 census Metro Detroit area is the most racially diverse area in the United States. There needs to be more Asian/White people in Detroit. This is because not all whites like Blacks. Which is very sad. Even here on yahoo answer I read such racist answers which make me cry.Black people are nice people and America should realize that.
My solution is to encourage more companies to come to Detroit so that people get jobs and pay their taxes so that the City of Detroit can do something.

'Detriot' (sic) - a Freudian slip perhaps.
Unfortunately, years of adverse publicity (e.g. Riots, Hell nights, urban blight and political corruption) have earned the city a seedy reputation.
A good PR campaign & increased efforts at regentrification of the downtown area are required to correct this image for most Americans.

For one, fix our roads. Next, we need to get a major tourrist attraction. We tried it with Greektown and Motor City Casino, but people will just go to Vegas or Windsor for casinos. If we could come up with something people like, we'll have tourrists everywhere.

One step would be to reduce crime. Detroit is always near the top of the murder rate list.

I think we need more shopping downtown. Not that it is one of my past times, but all the tourist attractive type places have lots of shopping. When there is lots of shopping there are more restaurants and then more night life type stuff and I think it all starts from there.
