I love this question.
Dems were the party of the semi-feudal system in the agrarian Southern US. When the Communist International relocated to the US in 1876 they settled in Philadelphia where they set to work advancing the cause of Communism in the US. Although they were politically non-aligned, they had a tactical alliance with the Democrat Party in the North through the Labour movement which the Communists inspired and led. After the Bolshevik Revolution (1917) the Commitern set about consolidating the many diverse Communist movements throughout the world and as a general rule, all Communist Parties were referred to as Democratic Parties. Therefore it was important that the Communists turn their loose alliance with the Democratic Party of the US into an actual affiliation and if possible, control. Most Communists after WWI remained members of the CPUSA or various other Socialist parties and Front organizations, but supported Democratic candidates for public office. The movement was particularly strong in academia, journalism, labour and entertainment. It was their control of the Labour movement gave them considerable political influence.
After the split between the Stalinist Left and the anti-Stalinist Left (Trotskyites) just before WWII (largely over the issue of Hitler-Stalin Pact and Stalin’s purges), the Trotskyites abandoned nearly all active political involvement. The Dems were by this time a Socialist party thanks to the New Deal and many were sympathetic to the cause of Communism. This turned the Trotskyites away from them but they could not embrace the views of Republicans who were the only organized anti-Communist movement in the US following WWII. A few southern Democrats attempted to form a new party (Dixiecrats) which garnered little support and fizzled out after the 1948 Presidential election (it only existed for 2 years). It was the anti-Communism of Republicans that drove even more Dems and other Leftists to near treasonous support for the Communists and drove the Trotskyites to even more vehement attacks on the Dems in general.
With the growth of the neo-Marxist movement in the 1960’s and their ultimate coup against the DNC leadership around 1968, the party fell squarely in the radical Socialist camp. Hence the nomination of George McGovern for president. Until the Mid-term elections of 1994, Southern Dems would occasionally support Republican Presidential candidates but it was extremely rare that they supported Republicans for local or State offices.
Fact is, Harry Truman, John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson were the only anti-Communist Democrat Presidents of the 20th Century. Contrary to popular belief FDR was not an anti-Communist.
This is how the Democratic Party became the de facto Socialist Party.

When did the Republicans decide to make the United States into the very thing we are supposedly fighting against? A government based on religion and religious laws that has become oppressive, has loosely defined morals when it comes to torture, will do anything to squash dissent even if it means exposing an undercover CIA operative (whether or not she was undercover at the time of the exposure is irrelevant. She HAD been undercover and all of her connections, and any agent she had ever worked with are now all compromised.) and scaring it's own citizens into voting for them.

Socialists believe that factories and different places of employment must be owned via the state, the staff, or a collective of a few variety yet not privately held. Democrats believe that inner maximum possession is okay as long as a results of fact the state regulates the business enterprise by using regulations and the staff are represented via a Union. Democrats and unions presented all workers rights, reward, time without work, beyond universal time, holidays, well-being care, and extra. Republicans believe that its everyman for himself and the government ought to slightly exist for everybody. Republicans choose to run tough shod over the staff they care not for everybody or something exept the almighty greenback. Republicans believe the "unfastened industry" is the final decider of who wins and who loses. Republicans will in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, foyer to get all they are in a position to from the government interior the form of tax breaks, government loans and hand outs and bail outs mutually as on the comparable time lecturing against the evils of assisting out the elementary guy. they seem to be a team of grasping egocentric human beings.

i hope you all understand that this latest blitz to label the dems commies is all about the need for universal healthcare.
hope you all get that.
right now general motors spends more on healthcare per car than steel.
but cons want to label anyone who, quite logically, sees this as a competitive industrial and job growth issue as a commie.
i'm just trying to understand when cons sold their collective souls to the devil of corporate (short term) profit above all else - and selective profits at that...

FDR openly refered to Stalin as "Uncle Joe."
***EDIT***
Kudos to flightleader for his historical answer, below. To those who would disagree with it...stop doing so many drugs and perhaps you too may someday learn to appreciate history for the Truth it provides.
And what's with the "thumbs down" people? Is it you don't believe in history or you just wish that the history was different that it is?
**EDIT*** to nostrodamus...
Anyone who treats "profit" as a dirty word is a communist!
