I have tried using pesticides, but they burn the leaves off the shrubs and then the wasps/hornets just came back instead. I can't even finish planting my shrubs because I am afraid of being attacked by them. They seem to be in every bush in our front yard!

I know exactly how you feel because I used to be so phobic that I nearly jumped out of a moving car when a wasp flew in. However, after years of gardening and deciding that the little buggers weren't going to stop me from doing what I love, I researched each and every flying stinging insect I could find. I discovered that majority couldn't care less about us as long as we aren't messing with their homes. The one wasp you really need to look out for are the paper wasps because they attack as a group, but they will have a single guard who will nail you first as a warning. I know this from first hand experience and surprisingly it really wasn't that painful. Anyhow, I've learned that these insects are actually a gardeners friend in that they are great pollinators and eat the bugs we don't want around. I know it's hard, but just grit your teeth and plant. One trick I use to get through yard work where wasps are working is to just not look. If I feel something land on me I ignore it. It will not sting without provocation. I also like to say to myself as I work around the plants that bees are swarming is "A busy bee won't bother me" I'm certain that holds true for wasps as well. However, I have to admit that I still hate the big red ones...not sure why, but I do. Good luck

There was recently a news story about disappearing bees. There were so few this year that farmers were having trouble pollinating their plants. You may have fruit trees or other plants in your garden that benefit from the wasps and hornets.
Maybe an insect repellent would keep them away from you when you are working. They don't usually attack, but be sure you are not near a nest.

might sound weird but I have seen and heard of this. Get a sprayer or spray bottle, add water, dish cleaning soap and tobacco like from a cigar store. Mix together and spray it on your plants
