Me and a buddy 25 and 21 are both waiters with experience working in big city resturaunts. Any advice on what area is the best to work. i.e on or off the strip? Is it easy getting server jobs? Where is the best place to live?

to start with, if the place you currently work has a store here in vegas, request for a transfer. it's a lot easier for you to settle once you're here if you have a job waiting for you.
if not, then it will be a little work going store-to-store applying.

here are my tips:

1. Focus only in the westside of vegas. and by that i mean west of I-15 going up to Summerlin area, the upscale area of vegas. starting from buffalo going west all the way up to red rock casino would be your best shot. there are a bunch of restaurants here from mid to upscale. I work in the BOCA Park area, where they have Kona Grill, Cheesecake Factory, even the newly opened Gordon Biersch, and a whole lot more as you go up on Charleston. Depends on what kind of restaurant service experience you have, you should've plenty of options.

2. East side is a NO! NO!

3. North Vegas? Just stay where you are right now.

4. Strip? Unless you want to put up with cheap "tourists pretending they dont know anything about tipping", then please do. Although I have friends that work in fine steakhouses that make a couple bills a night, they've been in that place for so long a time that they've discovered how to work it down there.

5. Competition will be very stiff especially right now, it's summertime and I've seen a lot of applicants come in and out everyday at my store. So, make sure you present yourself formally (my managers would just laugh at you if you come in with a informal attire on). Then again, that would depend on what kind of restaurant you'd want to be in.

6.Lastly, I'm just lucky to have landed this serving job in the summerlin area where the rich people live and our fellow service-industry-workers hang out to eat and have a great time!

So as an add on tip: It's the locals who will really give you the best or even crazy-and out of this world TIP! and not those cheap tourist who you will wait on once and will never see again for the rest of your life (this is probably why they're so damn cheap!)

now for your last question. place to live? anywhere around the summerlin area. safe, nice and less crowded communities are pretty abundant here so choices are not an issue. you can also check-out the southwest side of town where they have a lot of new homes and condos, both for sale and lease. rent can be anywhere from $650 (studio) to $1500 (2 or 3 bedroom).

Public transport system here in vegas is pretty decent. Although it can be an issue if you live somewhere on the outer communities as there are only limited routes available. Having your own car is much more convenient.

About me:I moved in here a little over a year ago and took me a whole month to settle down. It wasn't hard as thought it would be.

Good Luck to you and your buddy!

Most of those employed in food and beverage at the Strip hotels and the downtown hotels are members of Culinary Local #26. Those positions, if any are vacant, are filled through the union hall. The Venetian on the Strip is a non-union property and has a lot of upscale eating places.
Where to live is very subjective. I would just avoid the big apartment complexes east of the Strip which are bounded by Sahara Avenue on the north, Maryland Parkway on the east, Flamingo Road on the south and Koval Lane on the west. That grid is the most heavily populated grid in all of Nevada and is known by Metro Police as "crack alley".
