Id suggest Rome too. Ive just got back and thought it was fab. The best city Ive ever been. Its somewhere you can go by yourself easily as its so easy to get around and people are friendly and it wont break the bank. I got a flight with Ryanair for just over £50. Warning though places like the Vatican, Colluseum get really busy this time of year but other than that its fine....just get there early.

Cheap...I would suggest Sofia, Bulgaria. It's a pretty big city(1.3 million) and has a lot of shopping. Many malls have opened in the last 1-2 years. The food is cheap, while being very good. You can find cheap hotels, just not in the downtown area.

Budapest is lovely. I am an American and live here 6 months a year. Lots to do and alot cheaper than Western Europe. Most people speak some English and there are alot of guided tours here.People are very friendly. I love the Turkish Baths here, lots of spas. On the summer nights there are many clubs and much night live if you like that.Lots of hotels and youth hostels.

all of the above are not cheap. Italy especially is known to be one of the most expensive places in europe for city breaks. barcelona and prague aren't cheap either. i would actually recommend eastern europe, perhaps Riga? (or maybe somewhere in poland or croatia?) flights are reasonable, accomodation is cheap and day-to-day expenses are minimal. the people speak better english than we do and are very friendly from experience.

Prague is very varied to suit all ages. If your younger, weekends tend to be busier. Puppet show and chance to see opera cheap. ( I paid £12 for royal box and included champagne at half time) Beautiful buildings pleasant people.
Rome is also another lovely place, good pensionne (B&B) Des Artistes (on web) either in dorm or private rooms but showers very powerful TAKE CARE !!!!!!!!

I was in Lisbon recently, loved it. Stayed in the Alfama part of the city, it was really good.
If you go to Lisbon, bring good walking shoes. It's hilly.
Food is excellent value, two of us ate in restaurants for appreciably less then we would in Ireland.

Go to an east-european country (Krakow, Prague).
I think Dubrovnik is a nice place to go aswell.
If you like art visit Bruges or Antwerp.

if you want cheap, you might want to consider the U.S. one pound is worth about two dollars at the moment, and I hear Florida is lovely this time of year (just not Orlando)
