It doesn't mater whether or not Voldemort heard in full or in part the prophecy. He clearly heard enough to make the choice between Neville and Harry, and he picked Harry.
The prophecy did not say "Born to wizard born and muggle born who thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies." James parents were both witches and wizards and it's likely his grandparents were as well, Lily came from a muggle family. And from the prophecy combined with the fact that Dumbledore said it could have meant either to Harry or Neville, we know that James and Lily did something to defy three times. Thus the prophecy would have clearly denoted Harry if it had said this.
Nor did it say "Born to blood that is pure who thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies." The Longbottoms are a pure-blood family. And just like the Potters, we know from the prophecy that Frank and Alice defied Voldemort three times. Had the prophecy said this then it would have clearly been about Neville.
No, the prophecy said "Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies." We know of only two students at Hogwarts who are Harry's age whose parents defied Voldemort three times. Harry and Neville. And we know of only two students Harry's age who were born at the end of July, though this is because we only know of two students born in July . Again, they are Harry (July 31st) and Neville (July 30th).
Most students we only get a birth year for so we have to certainly eliminate them from the prophecy. Only five students Harry's age can we say have their date of birth given and thus would we even consider for this prophecy. Besides Harry and Neville, the other three are Ron, Hermione, and Malfoy. Ron's folks may have defied Voldemort three times, though they don't appear to have been members of the Order of the Phoenix until Voldemort's return and we don't know how many besides the order defied him the first time around, but he get's eliminated cause his birthday is March 1st. Hermione's birth was September 19, 1979 (classes at Hogwarts start within the first week of September and it looks like you've got to already be eleven before you can start taking classes) and her muggle parents would have been unlikely to have defied Voldemort. Indeed they would have more likely just been killed by him because their muggles. So with two strikes against her (and a third as the prophecy pretty much says the one to defeat Voldemort will be a boy), Hermione is eliminated from the prophecy. Malfoy was born on June 5th, but what really eliminates him from the prophecy is the that his father was a Death Eater and unlikely to defy Voldemort.
So he can assume that Voldemort heard at least the first two lines of the prophecy. And it is likely the only thing Snape did not hear and thus tell Voldemort was "but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not," Based on what he heard, Voldemort knew to look for a couple who had defied him three times who would have a baby boy born at the end of July. This ended up being Harry and Neville. Because the prophecy said he'd mark one as his equal, Voldemort had to choose which one to personally kill. He chose Harry.

It could have been Neville until Voldemort tried to kill Harry and couldn't. Harry's scar (and to a some degree killing Harry's parents) is what Voldemort did to "mark him as his equal." Harry asks this same question in book five and Dumbledore explains to him why it is he, Harry, that has to face the Voldemort not Neville. Then he explains it further in books six during their lessons together. Explaining that the prophecy has meaning only because Voldemort and Harry believe it does. And then points out that because of all the suffering Harry has suffered at the hands of Voldemort, Harry would still seek to destroy him even if he had never heard the prophecy.
Neville will have his day, I'm sure. He has his own score to settle with Bellatrix, though he may not succeed. But he is not the one "destined" to defeat Voldemort.

Harry is the 'marked' one. However, I've always felt that Neville will play a huge role in the defeat of Voldemort. I figure he will be one of the people who dies in the last book. It will be interesting to see if there is a bigger connection between Neville and Harry than what we have been told about so far. Great Question.

No, at least I don't think so. The main thing for that is the fact that the entire series has been about Harry! It's from Harry's perspective. If it just randomly became anyone but Harry to defeat the Dark Lord it wouldn't make any literary sense, although Neville really could use some glory (just like Ron). I say Neville kills Bellatrix. :D

It was possible until Voldemort marked Harry as the child. He is now the marked child, not Neville. It could have gone either way if Voldemort hadn't acted upon it.

i think that maybe it could be, but i don't think that will happen. Maybe though, Neville and Harry will both defeat Voldemort and then it is even. idk. there is something else i am wondering about though. 7 is a magical number in the wizarding world. This is the 7th book, i believe there are 7 pieces in a horcrux, this is Harry's 7th year at school, Ginny is the 7th child in a pureblood wizard family and Ginny is Harry's girlfriend. I think that Ginny will play an important role in this book. What do you think? I also don't think that Dumbledore is really dead. I think he might come back somehow or something, i really don't know. Do you have any theories? If you do, e-mail me at oreoeater21@yahoo.com. Thanks!

No, because Neville's never been marked as Voldemorts equal.

its not possible because you-know-who is the one that chose harry . and if you read between the lines dumbledore says that it could have been harry or neville but voldemort chose harry because he thought harry was more dangerous to him than neville

no. dumbledore said to harry that voldemort chose harry when he went to his parents house and tried to kill him. im sure if he heard the rest of the phrophecy, he woudl have waited to see which boy would be the bigger threat. harry is indeed the chosen one, but i do think the one with the power to vanquish the dark lord is snape. trelawny sais this when snape is aproaching the door to listen in on the conversation. in a literal sence it could happen, and it is very jkrish. plus she pauses after this, so i think the first line is for sanpe, the rest harry.

Well its not really a theory, but its more of a question. If hogwarts opens, will harry go back? will it even open again? if it doesn't, will harry defeat voldemort? now for your questions. I think snape will try to kill harry. ya he defended him this whole time, but i'm starting to feel the winds of change. I actually don't know what R.A.B. is.
