...an indirect free kick in the opposing team's penalty area? It is in the laws of the game, that if the defending team commits a foul punishable by an indirect free kick in their own penalty box (such as the goalkeeper handling the ball in the penalty area kicked to him by his own teammates), the other team gets an indirect free kick wherever the foul was committed, not a penalty kick. You only get a penalty kick if the defending team commits a foul punishable by a direct free kick. Its very unusual and I saw a video clip of Gabriel Batistuta taking one in the penalty area of the defending team. Has anybody else witnessed something like that? Has it happened recently? Not to my knowledge.

So it doesn't really happen in top professional matches a lot? I mean I've seen lots of times a goalkeeper getting a yellow card for wasting time, yet the play continues without a free kick, or many times where there was some sort of foul committed in the penalty box where it would normally be a free kick, but the ref keeps the game going.

Happens much more at the youth level with passes back to the keeper or dangerous plays.

YES!!!! I coach a high school team and it was called against us once. The goalkeeper had handled the ball on what was ruled a pass back and he gave the indirect free kick from about 10 yards in front of the goal. We made an 11 man wall on the goal line, and when the ball was touched had one defender attack the ball. The wall worked, and no goal was scored. I had to apollogize to the referree after the game, because I had screamed at him that he was out of his mind, but then I looked it up and he was perfectly correct.

Ive seen it happen cant remember the teams who were playing but the indirect free kick was just outside the six yard box. So the wall wasn't able to stand the right distance everyone was on the line.
