I got two turtles just a few days ago and their living in the same tank. They're those kind that you get in Chinatown. I'm wondering what type they are (Right now, they're 3/4 inches;green for the most part;shell points upward in the middle; and they have a brown oval like thing around the backs of their head or on the sides).

I am also wondering how big they will grow up to and how big the tank I should buy for them and other needs.

If you got them in chinatown they are most likely red-ear sliders....do they have red on the sides of their heads?? If so, then they will live up to 12 years and you must buy a special UVB light and as they grow a bigger tank...you must keep their water clean and wash your hands after touching them because young turtles may carry salmonella. They are beautiful and very nice to have but you must care for them. They also need lots of calcium but it won't do much good if you don't have the special lighting. They eat goldfish, crickets, dark leafy veggies, and of course the food they sell at the pet shop. Young turtles need more protein that adults. They can grow as long as a dinner plate. It is illegal to sell turtles less than 4" in the US but now that you have one please care for it, they are beautiful. I also have two of them and although they require much care it is worth it..hope this helps. You can also google info.

Congratulatiosn, you now own a Red-ear Slider.

These guys can live 20 years and the males can get to 9" long and the females to 12". The tank size recommendation for turtles is about 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length.

Sadly, to keep these guys healthy and happy is probably going to take more work and cost than you really want, but you can get all the info you'll need at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com Check out the Article on Your First Water Turtle for starters.

I had small turtles for years and they never grew much.
They would sit in the tank on top of eachother and eat a lot and poop a lot.
Beware of leaving them on the floor, they are actually REALLY fast and they might hide from you.

I had the green ones, about 2 inches long with yellow on the underside and flippers with little claws.

Yes, you have red ear sliders, and please do the research and use the sites the others have suggested. These guys require an expensive set up, and they do need a lot of room. If you get everything they require, they are great pets and I hope you can care for them the way they need and enjoy them for many years to come. So many of these guys get sold to people who have no idea how to take care of them and don't look into how to either so I am glad that you want to take care of them properly.
