Here they hire outside contractors who are already trained.

They both contract out, so you might not get their trained specialists but rather a secondary company. You may have to ask who will be doing the installation and what kind of guarentee they give on those services, etc. And then go with the one that gives the best answer. Beware: We were going to have Lowes remove our old bathtub and then install another one (no other bathroom work) and they sent a contractor out (not from their store--a seperate company). When the guy was at our house he quoted us around $1,000 which included the price of a new tub and surround, but when we got the quote from Lowes two weeks later it was more than three times that quote and did not include the tub or supplies for a job that would take less than one day of work. I know this because we ended up tearing out the tub and installing the new one ourselves. So if you are going to go with them insalling do not purchase the flooring until after you get the final quote. You might find that one will offer you a better price than the other and you don;t want to purchase your flooring only to find out that they want an exorborant amount for installation costs.

Lowe's apparently doesn't train anybody, and I had an $8000 repair bill caused by their professional delivery team to prove that.

I believe they mostly hire outside contractors to do installation services (except appliances - they hire 14 year olds to do that). Lowe's did carpet for me a few years ago, and an outside contractor did the installation. An outside contractor also did the installation on a storm door and garage door opener - one purchased from Lowe's, one from Home Depot.

No they use outside independent contractors. I agree with "sensible man", you would do better to hire your own contractor to do the installation. Just be sure they are licensed, insured, pay no more than 10% down and the rest when they finish the job, if it takes longer than a day. Good Luck!!

Home Depot, at least where I live, hire outside contractors; all their contractors must be bonded, have references and have a legitimate business licence.

Nope. You pay extra to them to hire a licenced/bonded contractor that you could have hired yourself for less money.
