Is it ok to use on a standard road car? I know the legal implications.

Assuming you have a diesel car. Yes... But...the difference is is that the red diesel fuel has a much higher sulfur content and may damage the catalytic converter on the exhaust system. The sulfur actually acts like a lubricant in the engine. I have a 1997 Ford F250 7.3 diesel and I've put 180,000 miles on the motor running strictly red fuel with no bad effects. Just don't get caught...big fine. Beware of taking the vehicle in for repairs at a shop you don't know...they may be pricks and turn you in.

It won't hurt the engine unless it is cheap trashy fuel. But like you said the legal implications aren't good. You get caught and you get fried.
You have to pay the fine first. Then you have to pay all the back road taxes, (both state and federal) based on the mileage on you odometer.
That is what that red dye is in there for so the cops will know when they stop you it is off road diesel.

It is ok to use as long as it's not being put into a 2007 model vehicle as they require ultra low sulfur diesel and off road diesel is low sulfur.

technically, other than the legal side of things, its exactly the same as white diesel other than it has a dye in it that will stain every aspect of your fuel system. the only reason people ever have problems with red being "dirty" or "impure" is when they get it out of farmer's tanks and its full of crap from the farmer putting sticks in it to see where its up to (no offense to farmers intended)

diesel is diesel. Yes it's a no-no...but the "red" is just dye so the authorities can see if you put it in another unauthorized vehicle.
