My son wasn't picked this year for All-stars this year becuase of politics in our little league. Everyone knows that you have to know someone (as opposed to having the skills) to get into one of the 14 spots on the team and most don't have the skills my son has. I think it's BS!! Would you be upset if this happened to you? What would you do?

PS. Our league president isn't the sharpest tool in the tool box. He just happened to get the position because (again) he knew people that knew people...

I was involved in youth baseball for many years and saw this type of issue come up many times. All I can tell you is, welcome to the politics of youth baseball. You might as well suck it up and move on because there is nothing you can do about it. It is the coaches of the All-star team that have the responsibility to select their team and no league official will enter into the mix. Yours probably is not the only complaint and he will tell all of you that he picked the players he felt would make up the best team, and he is the manager. He wins, and you and any others that feel differently lose.

There's a lot more for your son to learn by not being picked to the All-Star team than by being picked. You though, must be the teacher in this situation.

Your son will not always feel that All-Star baseball teams are the most important thing in the world. One of the main reasons he feels that way now is because of how much importance you place on it. I recommend explaining to him that who you are and what you can do has nothing to do with an all-star team. Make sure he knows he's loved and that his identity will never be found on some subjective grouping made up by other people.

For the most part, I live under the philosophy that most people are idiots and anything run by people is usually 90% full of ****. I expect things to not be fair or done done right. However, if I had a son and it meant a lot to him I'd have to be pissed about it. So, if your son doesn't seem to care, don't worry about it. If it's extremely important to him then I'd get some of the other parents on my side and talk to them about it perhaps. Trying to get your son on the team would mean throwing a kid off of it as well though. Do you wanna be the guy that gets another kid kicked off for yours to play?

Now why in the world would you want your son ina league like that??? Are these the kind of people you want your child to emulate and grow up to admire? Are you one of the Martha's Vineyard yuppies?
Want to see how good he really is? Drive him over to one of those "parking lot" games where kids from the neighborhood gather. That's exactly where many national league greats learned their game. But... when he comes home with a black eye and bloody lip, let him work it out for himself.

It's unfortunate when situations like that happen. I think the most important thing is to stress to your son that politics played a big role in team selection. It doesn't mean you have to badmouth other kids (or even their parents), just make sure your son is aware that this isn't a reflection on his playing ability so he doesn't get discouraged. Just my two cents.

We all think our child has more talent than all the rest, politics is always the scapegoat excuse for not being able to accept the truth.

We all evaluate talent differently, and make desicions as to what a teams needs are when selecting.

Stop acting like a child, or your son will end up like you.

All caps impressive, the question about steroids was purely to excersize the mind, obviously some of us don't get much.

Sorry

Sounds like Jeter versus Orlando Cabrera. We all know Cabrera is having the better season but somehow Jeter gets on the team and starts. Doesn't make sense does it?

Jeter plays on the Yankees. Cabrera on the Angels. There lies the difference and Orlando in my opinion is more impressive because he plays on an inferior offensive team (on paper)! Oh and don't forget about Guillen. He should have been starting. Jeter should not have been on the team, sorry!
