it was for this reason that i buy the socks with designs on them(like puppies \, clouds, whathaveyou) and purposely mismatch them.... i got so tired of only having one sock to a pair, that i decided to just match them all by mismatching them. It's kinda become my trademark now....i've been doing this well over 10yrs...lol

To tell the truth, I believe it is the washer that eats them. I've wondered the same thing and the one day after emptying the washer I saw the tip of something sticking out from under the agitator. I pulled on it and it slowly revealed itself as a sock. If I hadn't noticed it then the washer would have certainly eaten that sock during the next load. I'd bet that if we dismantled our washers after they break down that we'd find numerous sock in the belly of the washing beast.

It's a Sock Monster. In the book Hogfather, Terry Pratchett the author explained how humans created such a character.

I think there are sock gods who take them....an additional option is that some of them are now securely wrapped ever so tightly under the agitator on the inside. Unscrew the top cap and lift out the agitator...and just hope they're not there, because the resolve is just cutting them away...the sock gods are not happy gods, if they can't have them...neither can you!

They could just be fooling you. I accidentally bleached one of my navy blue socks once and it turned lighter blue. For months I was looking for the lighter one and the darker one. Took me a while to figure out that they belong together. I was tired of holding onto these two socks and was getting ready to throw them away when I noticed they had the same pattern. Together at last!

Why, of course, the sock monster ate them! ;)

Either that or there is a massive army of militant mutant sock puppets out there, just waiting for the right time to strike...
