The whole story of Friday the 13th has to do with the Templars. The Templars became the earliest bankers known to man. They invented the whole banking system. Back in around 900 a.d. I think. Their organization was so large and spanned through so many countries, that they were able to hold money for a person in one place, and give them a note of credit so that they can pick it up in another place without having to travel with all of their money on them. They also loaned out money. It turned out that Philip the Fair, King of France had gone into debt and owed the Knights Templar a very sizeable sum of money, and to ensure that he wouldn't have to pay them, he corroborated with Pope Innocent (the 3rd I believe) to shut down their whole operation. The Pope consented and the plans went through to seize all Knights Templar in France as that was where their main headquarters were and their grand master resided there. Upon seizing them, the King was also intended on recovering their massive wealth and reclaiming a fortune. However, there were many sympathizers who had to have tipped them off, as they found no trace of treasure or money when they seized the Knights in the headquarters or any where for that matter. They were tortured for weeks and made to confess to heresies that were largely false, but would rather give lies than betray the truth of their mission. So the day came when the King and the Pope sentenced the lot of them to death, by burning at the stake. The date of execution was Friday October 13. On that day, Hughes De Payen, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar spoke a curse while burning to death, that in exactly one year, the King and the Pope will meet him before God and there will be a Tribunal amongs them to judge their punishment for their crimes. In exactly one year, the King died in a hunting accident, (I believe, I'm not exactly sure, but he died) and the Pope had died of a heart attack. As well, there is a legend in that village that the day the Templars burned, the smoke from their bodies did not dissipate in the sky, but hung so thick in the village and left a horrible residue on all that it clung to. Since then, people being completely superstitious in the Middle Ages knew all the rumors of the missing fortune and there had to be refugees of the Knights Templar to have stolen it away. As well, due to the curse uttered by the Grand Master on his death bed coming to fruition made the people paranoid about their mystical powers and secret rituals that the day was cursed for all people. If you wish to know more about the Knights Templar, you should read Holy Blood, Holy Grail. There are alot of books on the subject, but this book was written by the most knowledgable experts in this particular field. And they have the most extensive bibliography to back up their information as historical fact.
