Felony offenses are either a state or a federal offense.
If it is a state offense, then your state's sentencing laws are controlling. In some states, there are sentencing guidelines which judges are required to follow. These typically indicate a range of punishments varying from presumptive probation to presumptive prison time for an offense. Different states also give their judges varying amounts of leeway in determining sentencing.
At the federal level, there are the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. These were once mandatory, but the US Supreme Court has since struck down the idea of a mandatory sentencing scheme at the federal level. (Some crimes STILL have mandatory sentences, usually only the capital ones).
For specific information on the possible punishment for an offense, you need to contact an attorney licensed in your state. For a referral, contact your local or state bar association.

Depends on the crime, murder of course. Armed robbery, drug offenses often carry manditory sentances. Simple non aggrivated assault c, maybe. Most other assault charges and a,b and c felonies, expect to do some time. Class d, you get probation, depending on the crime.
