I guess it meant that he understands hunting about as well as he understands everything else.
Hunters have spent centuries refining the ability to humanely dispatch prey as efficiently as possible.
The goal of hunting isn't to be cruel. It's also not to follow around a trail of blood through the woods for hours. It's mainly to harvest an animal for food. The hunter shouldn't suffer but the bird sure as heck shouldn't either.
