Establish the answers before you ask the question. If it is a yes/no question establish what is yes and what is no. By establish i mean let the pendulum establish not you.
It is appropriate to ask a pendulum about things that are within your control, about situations where you have the right to make a choice, or about things your subconscious already has access to. Things that can Cause an Incorrect Response from the Pendulum:
Poor communication - (Inaccurate phrasing) The most important thing is how you phrase the question. Be specific don’t generalize.
Being tired -Forcing the situation. Using the pendulum even though the time or circumstances may not be right.
Being off Center - Feeling mentally or emotionally out of balance. You need to be in the right frame of mind.
Focusing too heavily on the pendulum itself, and not enough on the information inside you.
Being too close to high frequency electrical equipment (operate at least 3 ft from a TV or computer screen).

Yeah, we use one all the time, in conjunction with listening to the "inner voice". When I can't feel that warmth and peace inside for a question (because I'm not in tune or can't be objective), I use a pendulum.
The trick with using a pendulum is you need to be VERY specific about your questions. For instance, we wanted to find out the sex of our baby. We asked, "Is it a boy?" (No.) "Is it a girl?" (No.) Then I suggested to my husband to ask, "Does it have XX chromosomes?" (No.) "Does it have XY chromosomes?" (Yes.) So, I guess the TRUTH was that the foetus was neither a "boy" or a "girl" but was of non-specific gender with the chromosomal potential to become a boy.
Other common problem questions may be... "Should I ...?" This works some of the time, and some of the time it doesn't because in some cases there is a range of "right answers." If you take the first "yes" you get, you might be short-changing yourself. The most important thing with using a pendulum is to think out all the possible solutions and ways of asking the questions in your head, and ask all of them. That way you'll eventually get the best guidance.... ie, use heart AND mind.
Also, to be on the safe side it's always a good idea to pray to God or benevolent spirit guides before you ask a question, to ensure that it's angels who are answering you, and not some rogue negative entity. And it's nice to say a prayer of thanks, at the end, too. That should help ensure that your answers are coming from the right spiritual source.
God bless you. xo

Added: I have found that sometimes the angels aren't willing to give a straight answer, because the answer is something we're not yet supposed to know. Also, I once had a pendulum that was energetically damaged, and I found it very hard to use. I have found that the clearer the crystal is, the clearer the answer will be. Some pendulums are excellent, some are just mediocre.

As with all tools, Pendulums are affected by the human condition. As with all things doing with intuition we, as humans, have this very nasty habit of getting in our own ways. We want something to be a specific answer so that's the way a pendulum points.
The other part of this is that with all tools there are some things they are better at then others. Also they should not be indespensible. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't since of course we have that habit of coming from ego on a semi-regular basis.
That's when we step in our own ways and things go wrong. Those times that the tool shows a wrong answer is to bring us back to earth.
You have only been using this tool for a couple of months, so 70-80% is not bad. Like anything it takes practice. There are really no tricks to it. It just takes practice to stay out of ego and out of the way of your channel.

I use my pendulum when I need advice about certain things; about a month ago I didn't know what I wanted to major in and became confused; so I pulled out my pendulum and started meditating and I soon begun asking it questions on what college path should I choose; I ended up choosing English/Journalism and I'm doing quite well in the area. I clean in it salt water to keep the energy flowing in it every night and I get clear results every time. I heard that it takes practice once you began to use it. Soon after, you become very intermediate with it and the pendulum understands you; sitting in a quite room can help also when meditating.

When using a pendulum, you are going to have to establish that it is an extension of your own body. The pendulum is a way of asking your own subconscious for an answer to something that you may not understand completely due to reality keeping your truest intuition and psychic senses so clouded.
There is too a method of using the pendulum to communicate with any spirits that may be in your vicinity. That is largely based on how much you use your pendulum and become familiar with it as an extension of your inner pychic abilities and deeper subconscious. Just know that we still don't know half as much about our mental, emotional, and psychic capabilities, and this is merely a stepping stone to harnessing the capabilities.
As well, we seem to feel lost when we are looking for answers and are unable to find them within ourselves. If you meditate, and look for signs around in Nature, you are able to find that the Spirit of the World, and even of the Cosmos is able to help guide you. We all have Spirit Guides, pendulums are perfect for introduction to them. Happy hunting for your perfect extension of your inner consciousness!

The reason I generally don't advocate the use of pendulums is because often enough faulty hands can skew the results. So far, in my experience the most accurate methods of divination are astrology and tarot.

Sometimes we push for an answer without even realizing it. This can cause a pendulum or any other amplifying device to go wrong.
On the other hand. I took both my daughter and granddaughter to a pagan store in Salem Massachusetts. They picked out pendulums and we "tested for compatibility before buying" I asked them to use the simplest and most natural coding--the movement of the head for yes and no, and, a circle for maybe or mixed answer.
My granddaughter had problems as she always circled. I touched the back of her hand with one finger and "helped" her after saying "Don't worry about it working, relax and let what is to happen happen."
I would give you the same answer.
If you want the truth....Ask a Pagan.

I use pendulums and tarot cards. The pendulum is very accurate for me. (My grandma and I are very interested in things like that so we try new things all the time.)
To use the pendulum, you have to completely clear your mind. Don't focus on what you want your answer to be. Focus on your question, and send energy to it to give you an accurate response.

I've personally never use the Pendulium. Some can use it very well, while others not. I would use this tool for personal use and guidance, not for making choices.
We need to go within ourselves to make choices and be accountable for them.
Tarot works very well with such things.
