What birth years are considered with "generation"?

Like Baby boomers are what year to what year? Generation X'ers are what year to what year? Generation y'ers... and so on... Which years of birth are they referring to when this term is used.

Baby boomers are from about 1946 (just after WWII ended) to the early/mid 1960's.

I think it's like people who are born in the 70's ,80's etc. are the generations.
