.ttf extension is actually the file format for a font...a TrueType font.

Files that you download with the .ttf extension can be copied to the Fonts folder to install them. Eg..."Arial.ttf" is the actual file name for the Arial font that you see in MS Word and all other applications on your PC.

.ttf is normally used to hold a True Type Font. It is an alphabet that your computer uses for a style of font.
