Yes on both accounts. However, hornets are gentle giants and will not sting without provocation. Have you tried just opening your garage to let it out? If not, then give it a go. If it won't leave or if it has built it's home in your garage you can get some wasp and hornet spray that reaches up to 20ft made by raid. That way you can spray the hornet and nest from a safe distance.

Yes and yes. Their stingers do not fall off like a bee's. they just keep coming back. Pour some vinegar on it immediately. And then ice it. They also sell spray in the cleaning section of Wal-mart for hornets. It shoots from a good distance. The trick is that it doesn't kill them, it only stuns them. You need to immediately go over and step on it till you hear it crunch. Otherwise all you have done is tick it off.

Yes & yes they are nasty little buggers. I would suggest that you get a can or hornet/wasp spray. You use it at a distance and get rid of them. Then when you are sure they are all dead,
get rid of the nest, or more will come back. But be careful, and make sure they are all dead, or they will come after you.
If it was outside I would say spray them with a jet stream of water till the nest is knocked down, but this one is in your garage.
