I have a pond in my backyard, it isn't one of those small ones for turtles...its very big and very deep. It has frogs in it and some bass---the forgs came on their own and the bass we put in. Anyway, I would really like some turtles in it. I live in upstate NY. I don't want to put up a fence, I just want some native turtles to be in it. But I want to purchase or adopt the turtles (not catch them from the wild). How would I go about doing this?

Upstate new york is far to cold for outdoor turtles most the year. If you did get one youd also need a fence for sure because turtles can sense water and thell move from pond to pond. and if you buy small chances are a cat or fox will eat them.

ADDED: I could find any native species to new york that arnt endangered

Call any animal rehab places in your area. I'm sure some people stop and pick up turtles in the road and take them to shelters and rehab places.

For some reason there have been an awful lot of turtles in the streets around where I live lately. In the last month, I've "caught" three painted turtles and two snapping turtles. I have a big pond, so I just take them home and let them go there.

You can always buy a turtle at a petstore. You should also ask the petstore if it would be a good idea to have them in the pond. I've never been there, but I assume upstate NY gets pretty cold. Turtles are reptiles, and reptiles are cold blooded, so they like warmer climates. Turtles in the wild hibernate when it gets too cold during the winter, and I'm concerned if your pond would be suitable for hibernation.

The mostly likely species for you would be the Painted Turtle. most of the other species from your area are not as good of choices for one reason or another.

You can usually find Painted for sale or adoption on-line. Try the adoption forum at http://www.turtleforum.com If no one is offering one, post a note asking for some and see what response you get.

They are also a great resource to help you find a good, trustworthy breeder to buy from.
