Laptop, DVD movie, and either a high capacity battery that will last at least 3-4 hours or an adapter that allows you to plug your laptop into a car cigarette lighter outlet. (DC to AC adapter)

Your operating system will either have a DVD player installed already, so that when you insert the disc, the player will automatically run and start playing your movie, or you will need to download or purchase a movie player.
For instance, for Windows, Media Player will play DVDs if you have a fairly recent version of it. Mac OS X comes with an application call DVD Player that does the same thing.
You didn't mention what kind of computer you have, so we'll never know and will have to just make suggestions for both platforms.
I suggest you first go to Download.com and search for movie players and DVD players (I'm assuming your talking about playing DVD movies, not just movies you already have on your hard drive in different formats like AVI, MOV, MPG and MPEG). After you search for files on the web site (like search for "DVD Player") then request the list to only display FREE licensed applications.
If you don't mind buying an application, I suggest PowerDVD for Windows. I suggest VLC Player for OS X.
