Ok, setting up a home network is not that difficult. However, it does take a bit of configuring and there are several steps. It can seem difficult when you have never done it before, but once you do it the first time you will see how simple it really is.

First off I encourage you to purchase an inexpensive, simple to understand, but with loads of great informatian and step by step instructions called:

Absolute beginner's guide to Home Networking", by Mark Edward Soper.

You can find this book at most book stores and even at large electronics stores such as Fry's electronics.

I encourage you to purchase this book because it shows you step by step how to hook up your network, configure security and enable file and print sharing. As I said, it is not difficult.

Basically, you already have your wireless adapters and your router. It sounds like you already have your desktop hooked up to the wireless router. Is that correct?

If so, all you need to do is add the laptop to your workgroup and run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard on the new laptop.

You will need to have your Workgroup Name, which you can easily access via Start--Control Panel---System Information, then click on the Computer Name Tab, and down towards the bottom is the Workgroup Name. This is the name you must put in at the correct place in the Wireless Network Wizard.

The other major item you need will be the Wireless Security Password, which is placed in the Router. Unless you have an unsecured Wireless Network, which is not safe at all, it means anyone at all can hook up to your Wireless Access Point in your Router and access the Internet and your computers.

If you do not as yet have security configured, go ahead and add your laptop, read the pages in the book on how to set up your Routers Security and do it later.

Thats about it really, as you already have your Wireless access via the Router and your desktops computer adapter. It is about adding the laptop at this point and running the Wireless Network Wizard. If the Workgroup Name is not the same, you are unable to comunicate with the laptop. This Wireless Network Wizard sets up the File and Printer sharing properly, without your having to go in and do it manually. It is much simpler this way.

Again, if you do not have security setup, I strongly reccomend you do so at your earliest opportunity. I understand your main need right now is simply adding your laptop to your network. But, security is vital and I hope you purchase that book, it is great and taught me a great deal about Home and Small Office networks.

Good luck and lots of fun with your new home network, have a great day!

Your computer actually has a network card that is connected via ethernet to the router. If your router is wireless then you can connect to it with your wireless laptop. If not, then you need to upgrade to a wireless router. If it is then you just need to add the network connection to your laptop by going to Start --> Settings -->Network Connections and click "Create new network connection" on the left hand side and follow the steps to get it hooked up to the router. But you are going to need the router's security information (WEP key) if it's not open security (which i wouldn't suggest).

Make sure the computers are in the same workgroup (you can do this by right clicking on My Computer and looking through the properties menu). Then in My Computer right click on the drive you want to share, and sharing should be one of the options. Then after you have turned sharing on for the drive, just open up My Network Places and the other PC should show up, and you can browse it just like you would any local drive.

I have your exact situation. Just start your laptop and tell your connection to search for a signal and it should connect. That is what I am doing. No special things are needed.
