You can have as many accounts as you like. Any bank who is asking you to close an earlier account is just trying it on. They want you to do all your banking with them.
Here's what you do.
You already have a cheque account.
Second step - open a savings account in bank number two.
Sooner or later they're going to ask you, would you like a cheque account?
Third step - open a second savings account etc.
And so on up the line.
Bearing in mind that each bank is probably going to allow you some credit on a cheque account. All you need ever do is flop some cash into each cheque account. You don't actually have to use them. The interest is low, but you got credit in each a/c.
Way to go.
Re Credit - always remember it's not your money and they can screw you if you go over their arranged limit. Read the small print on every deal with every bank.
Buy shares in each bank. That should shut them up. Now you're a shareholder - important. You can go to the AGM and make demands. You got a vote etc.

Not around here, so maybe it depends on your location (are you in the US?). I have about 8. I have 2 accounts at 1 bank, 3 at another, and the rest are all in different banks.

nope. I'm pretty sure you can open two bank accounts. Just explain the circumstances of why you needed two bank accounts. And try Bank of America, they're pretty lenient.

From an employers point of view: Very few employers would want to pay your wages into a UK bank account. It is not easy for them to do that, and it is expensive, compared to normal wage paying systems. You will really need an Australian bank account. I have HSBC UK and Australian accounts, but HSBC do not link them.

Where are you trying to do business? It's a normal, prudent practice to have more than one account. I have never heard of this.
