Completely agree. No way a singles hitter deserves that kind of money. I don't care what his batting average is. I know, I know he does more than just hit, ie great arm, fielder etc.. but still, not near enough stolen bases or pop. Can't justify it and I'm a big Ichiro fan.

There's more to consider in this deal than the pure numbers. If you look just at the stats then no, he isn't worth 20 mil/year. If you take into consideration the marketability and the increased exposure overseas he gives a team then I would say he is worth it. This is a lot like the Red Sox and Dice-K in that it gives them a presence in Japan and makes them a more attractive destination for other top players in the Japanese leagues. If I'm the Mariners I'd do whatever it takes to keep him, even if I have to overpay a little to do it. He's been the face of the franchise since he got there and they need him to keep the fans in the seats.

Two totally different things, different bureaus, different departments, and one has less than nothing to do with the other. You know, you can't just go on blaming one act for everything in the world, especially since the facts aren't out yet, there have been two investigations and so far, no indictments, let alone any kind of proof that Obama did anything remotely illegal. Cuts in the loan program wil not offset disaster relief funding. Half a billion won't even cover a quarter of the losses in New Jersey, from Irene, let alone the other states that were flooded from that, or the earthquake, or the fires and drought in Texas and New Mexico. Thats as foolish an argument as any put forth today.

No one is worth it, regardless of who they are. Not Ichiro, not Arod, not Ramirez, not Jeter.
But it stops being about performance and starts to be more about marketing.
Would they lose advertising, attendence and fans if they don't resign him?
Who is the substitution, what is the cost of that.
Would you rather have Ichiro for $20 mil or Abreu for $15 mil.
I will pass on the sushi and take Ichiro.
It's all a balancing (of books) act

I think that all players and coaches and front office deserve at least 100 mil per year. Come on screw the fans! Tickets should be about $50 for a game (cheap seats).
What a joke!!! I remember when my father could take our family of four to the game for $5 tickets spend some on food, and a souvenir. The fans were benefited.
Now everyone NEEDS $100+ Mil to just survive! Let's get it to the point where only advertisers and company boxes are all that are allowed to the games. The regular "poor" fans should watch it at home where they are forced to watch the advertisements!
Can you tell I am bitter about the outrageous money that we are paying sports figures. I have to pay over $3000 for my Charger season tickets. Love the game! Just wish it was in reach for more people to go watch the games.

a little crazy based on performance\age\etc, but you have to remember that the amount of revenues he brings to the team make him worth it. He is worth more than $100 million to the Mariners. Just go to a few games at Safeco field. The sheer number of Japanese fans who are admittedly only here to cheer on Ichiro is incredible.

Ichiro brings much to the game about getting on base and is definitely worth the money.

no athlete deserves even 10 million.
the tickets can then drop in price and american families can return to the park.
top exectutives that get Phds and MBAs and make 1-2 million with incentives and they live plenty "fat"
We should be paying inventors, researchers and doctors the money and not entertainers.
Our world is crazy and thats coming from a sports fan.

Not a chance--a top-of-the-order guy that doesn't consistently provide a significant offensive impact should not merit $20 mil/year. Now, I'm not saying he's not a good player, just that he's not a $100 million dollar player.
