but i'm still friendly and courteous, despite not really being a
good conversation person. and i don't ask private questions.

yes of course. you might want to try and be a bit more engaging by asking some questions about someone. Certainly not, how much money do you make or are you married, but perhaps, how was your weekend, or any plans for the weekend, what do you do for fun, do you have any pets, etc. People like people who take an interest in them and care about what they have to say. Try not to be so shy, and work on being a better conversationalist--it just take practice!

Yes. I was a very shy child. I know how it is. If I notice someones a little less out going I try to talk with them a bit and see if I can bring them out of their shell a little. I find a subject that interests them and talk about that. I just be sure not to be too pushy. Some people like their privacy.

Being shy myself, I generally feel bolder around people who are even more shy, and make a point of drawing them out and being sympathetic to their shyness.
But you can only do so much - if they are really closed off and expect you to do all the work, then there's not much of a conversation or connection possible.

Yes. What's odd is that I'm a relatively shy guy myself. But I find it intriguing, almost fun, by trying to get even shyer people to talk. I've made a few good friends that way.
