Sure as long as the word has more than one meaning. For example hot is the opposite of cold and also the opposite of ugly (as in she is one really hot chick).
If you say the temperature is hot it is the opposite of the termerature is cool. If you say a movie is hot it is almost the same thing as saying the movie is cool.

Of course. If two things are "equal" and a third thing is the opposite of one of them, it also must be the opposite of the other.

What is the opposite of "half empty" or "half full" (since they are equivalent)?
