I come across these questions about are Filipinos considered Asian, Pacific ISlander, or Hispanic? My theory is that most Older Filipinos, F.O.B's. or Filipinos from the PHilippines consider themselves asian cus they are amongst the Chinese, Korean, etc in the Philppines or if they live here in the Los Angeles now they just gravitate toward them. However us Fil-Ams gravitate toward Pacific Islanders or Hispanics because we do not feel a connection with Chinese, Korean, etc. We dont feel we look like them, talk like them, act like them, nothing. Filipinos live in places in Los Angeles where they share it with Pacific Islanders like Gardena, Carson, LB, also Filipinos live in places where they share it with Mexicans, Highland Park, La Mirada, Norwalk, Eagle Rock. So, I will keep it real and say MOST, I said MOST, Filipinos in Los Angeles would get insulted if you look at us like Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, etc cus we arent. Why cant we just be who we are FILIPINO, not PI or asian!

Ok we are american, Filipino american , I said that already "Fil-Am" so read next time. Also Chinese and Koreans dont look alike, are u kidding me? Asians are not Pacific Islanders do the research. Also talking about research I said Mexican, they were raped by the Spanish too. WOW! Also Filipinos and Mexicans have more in common, than Chinese. Read up on the Manila-Acapulco trade in the 1800's. If you are going to drop knowledge, any one of you, please be accurate. Dont take a knife to a gun fight as they say!

Well, you are correct in how you say that in some respects, Filipino culture is closer to Mexican (read Mexican as in Mexico, not Spanish) than say other Asian cultures, or Pacific Islander cultures. As a source, the Philippines are considered part of Asia not the Pacific Islands. There is much debate as to whom the original "finders" if you will of the Philippines (not the original inhabitants, but the first travelers to the islands). Most history books say they were originally found by Chinese fishermen who were lost at sea, but there are other theories. What is not theoretical, though, is that the Spanish did eventually come in the 1500's and established the Philippines as a Spanish colony, much the same way they did with Mexico, Central, and South America. So, in a sense, you will share many cultural traits with the Spanish and other Mediteranean cultures, since as a colony for so long, many of the cultural ways would have been picked up by the local Filipino citizens while they lived under this rule. In fact, much of the Filipino dialects share a lot of things in common with Spanish (my wife's dialect is Bicol, which has a number of Spanish words in it).
However, what you say is true of I think some Fil-Ams throughout the US. My friends in NYC hate to be thought of as Chinese when they go to Chinese restuarants. In some places the Chinese talk to them in Chinese and my friends have to say "I'm not Chinese." However, I think it is also true that some (note some, not all) see a person with Asian ethnicity and automatically assume either Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. They don't even begin to think of the other Asian ethnicities, such as Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino, Cambodian, Malayasian, etc. Why? Well, let's face it, the majority of the population has not been very exposed to these other cultures and unless the other people are a student of history or geography, they probably won't know anything about these other cultures. Unfortunately, the way our schools systems are now here in the US, the teaching about other cultures, whether they are Asian, Middle Eastern, African, European, or Central or South American is sadly lacking. Who can name five countries in each of these continents?

Why do you care about how you are classified? If you are an American citizen, you are American. Stop segregating yourself into a certain group. If you want to be considered Filipino, move to the Philippines and no one will ever question your ethnicity again.

korean and chinese doesn't look alike and don't talk alike and don't act alike. pacific islander is asian. philipine speak like chinese and act like chinese because philipino is related to china respectively. Korea and china has very different culture and don't share same blood . but, philipino does share same blood and have similar culture with chinese. if you are proud that your ancester was raped by spinards, then so be it. I just don't understand. okay let's say you are simmilar to mexican. mexican is asian then because mexican is similar to philipino. why do you want to be hispanic? if mexico and philipine are similar??? don't you rather want mexican to be philipine?? since part of mexican is asian. your thought prove your country inferior to hispanic culture.
