When I manually turn on the switch on the electrical panel in my house that controls a water pump, the switch immediately returns to the middle position and the background turns orange inside the switch. The pump doesn't start. What does this mean?

It means the circuit breaker is tripping. Something is wrong with the circuit or the pump. Don't keep trying to reset it until you fix the problem or have it fixed. Good luck.

Your breaker is tripping. The orange is a visual indication that the breaker has tripped. You either have a short in the line, the breaker has gone bad or the pump is bad and causing the breaker to trip.

It means you have a short or a bad breaker. Continually flipping the switch on could cause a fire. Get a pro to check out the circuitry.

If the motor has a capacitor on it, thier is a internal centrifical switching device that could be malfunctioning and needs lubrication(eg.light grease).It would be located on the armature end where the capacitor wires enter the motor.Remember to turn off the power before working on the motor.
