Start with normal. If you find you have to change it too often, or that it's leaking, then move up to Super, and if this still exists, then move up to Maximum Strength.
On the reverse, if you find yourself too dry, or the tampon is consistantly coming out overly clean, consider lowering the strength.
I tend to change mine every eight hours, or whenever it seems like it needs to be changed. (If you notice blood on the string, or you feel as if you have leaked, even when you haven't, it's time to change!)
If you have to change it more than every 4 hours, you need a stronger strength!

A woman period is heaviest in the first 2 days the last 3 or 4 the flow is reduced drastically. you must have noticed that. Most women use regular tampons and change them every 3 hours the first couple of days. During the night better be safe and use a pad as well. for the last days use the mini sized tampon. Don't leave it in there for more than four to six hours. Last day you can use a panty liner. Now I'm not sure how heavy your flow can get . you might need to change more often. it all depends on your observations so I suggest you use a pad too till you find out exactly how often you need to change and if it is advisable to use the super tampon the first days. It's just common sense really -listen to your body - it will guide you.

You should probably start with petite size tampons. You might want to wear a pantyliner or other thin pad when you first start using tampons, so you can learn how long it takes you to use one and not have to worry about leaks. The amount of time you keep one in is different for everyone, it just takes a little patience to find out how long it is for you, but you shouldn't wear one for more than 8 hours at a time.
Once you get used to using tampons, you can use the regular size, and if you find yourself having to change them a lot, you probably have a heavy period. If you only change it every few hours, you have a normal period.

if you aren't sure because you are new to this stick ot lites and regular. You will learn in a few years exactly which ones to use at what time. Use regular at the beginning and change it every 4-6 hours. When you notice that when you change your tampon there isn't very much blood on it switch to the lites. I wouldn't use heavy unless you were bleeding through a regular every 2 hours. Where a panty liner just in case it does go through but chances are since you have just started your period it wont. Good luck and read the directions in the box.

You change it at least every 4 hours. If you are not leaking in 4 hours then regular is fine. Heavy periods would be where you would soak a pad thoroughly and be ready to leak before 4 hours was up. Since you just started your periods it may take a while to know how it will be every month. Why not get one box of the multitampons where it has different absorbencies in one box and one box of regular ones. Use regulars unless you start leaking before 4 hours is up. If you start to leak use a super until your flow is lighter.

Younger, first-time period, you probably only need regular size. Change the tampon each time you use the restroom, do not leave one in for more than 8 hours!
Still use pads at night. It is not healthy to sleep with a tampon.
For the first few times, also use a pantyliner in case you do have heavier periods, this will help with any leakage.

Since you are a first-timer, start with lights. There is a good chance of the tampon breaking your hymen, and the larger the tampon, the more painful that will be. Once you get more used to your period, you will begin to recognize what days are heavy, regular, and light for you.
You have to change them every 4 hours, and you cannot sleep in them--use a pad at night. Using for more than 4 hours can increase the risk of toxic shock syndrome, which is explained on the back of all tampon boxes.

You should change it every 4-6 hours. If you need to change it sooner, you need a higher absorbency. If it is still fairly dry after 6 hours, you need a lighter absorbency. Your flow tends to change throughout your cycle. After adjusting accordingly a few times, you will know what your body needs.
Make sure you always have spares and pantyliner, just in case!

It all depends on how heavy your period is.
It could be 4 per day or 12 per day.
Heavy: lots of blood on pad, changing every two hours
Light: not a lot of blood on pad, changing once a day
