My plumber is dumbfounded. Once the thermostat triggers the pump to turn on, the heat turns on. Once it reaches the right temperature in the zone, the termonstat sends the signal to turn off, and the pump turns off. However, the baseboards remain hot, and the temperature in the zone continues to climb. I have to manually close the valve on the pipe in the basement to kill the heat. Once cool, I can open the valve again and everything is fine, until the heat is triggered to turn on again by the thermostat.

The pump should stay on until the heat equalizes.

The heat source for the hot water system should turn off first.

The pump should turn off a few minutes later when the heat has dissapated from the radiators.

The thermostat should have an anticipatory setting that actually turns off the heat source just before it reaches the set temperature.

The pump runs untill the water temperature drops below a set temperture.

Sounds as if the thermostat for the circulating pump or zone valve is not functioning properly.

Mention this to your plumber or hot water heating technician.
