Two things you can do: (1) Increase your intake of mono-and-polyunsaturated fat. These fats raise your "good" choesterol while lowering your "bad" cholesterol. Best sources are: avocadoes, eggs, fish, fish oil, flax seed, flax seed oil, nuts, and olive oil. (2) Increase your fiber intake -- aim for at least 25g of fiber in your diet per day. Beans and legumes are great sources of fiber, as are whole grain breads, cereals, and pasta. Dried fruit is also high in fiber, but it's high in sugar, so you don't want to eat a lot of it. Apples are another good source of fiber.
TIP: I take six 1,000mg caplets of fish oil and three tablespoonfuls of olive oil a day, and I also get about 30g to 35g of fiber in my diet every day. I used to be on cholesterol medication, but now I don't need it. My total cholesterol is around 180 and my "bad" cholesterol is around 100.

go vegetarian. I know it's a commitment, but health is priceless and drugs are only a bandaid for symptoms- let your body heal itself by putting the right things in it. I personally know two people who got their cholesterol, hypertension, etc. in order by adopting a vegetarian lifestyle.

Um...healthy diet. Talk to your doctor about the best plan for you. My friend was recommended the South Beach diet by her doctor, but that may not be best for everyone.

Stop eating hotdogs and drinking beer. Both are on the bad list when it comes to cholestrol.
