well..part of doing a paper is doing some research. If you do that you will see that there is NO scientific data to support evolution. There is theory. But no actually data. There is proof of adaptation. but not evolution. We have yet to discover a half monkey half man. And if evolution is a reality... why has evolution seemed to have stopped??
In my opinion... 5th graders are actually pretty smart. So do some research.. most colleges have web pages that are filled with that info.

This is a documented example of the evolution of man. You can see that the human race went gradually from walking on all fours to walking upright on two feet. As evolution progressed, the skeleton became more straight so as to stand taller than its predecessor's shapes.

It might be because of the Darwin's Theory of evolution. Genes get mutated or there might be difference because of the need for survival. Also environmental adaptions offer a great deal towards it. But this might be a bit difficult to aa grade 5 student! Just tell her/him that it is because human got that shape because that shaped help them do things in life. sorry dont know how to finish this!!good luck

hmm.
going purely off of reasoning, id have to say that they were probably changing shape to be more suited to walk on the ground, rather than have proportionally larger arms, wich are meant for living in trees. they dont get taller, so much as they grow more upright.
i think thats a relatively easy place to start from if your talking to fifth graders

I believe a lot of the height difference has to do with the posture of the humanoids. It also has to do with the change in their diet since a diet consisting of higher protein and calcium amounts tend to yield taller, bulkier people.
