We are on a wild goose chase to get our engine light to turn off on our 99 ford escort. It wont pass the emissions test until it does....and until it does we wont be able to renew our registration.
Weve done a few repairs and maintenance things and its still on. It does however, still need a tune-up. Could this be a reason for the engine light to turn on? I feel like we're pouring money into several issues hoping to randomly find the cause of the light being on.
Im told the previous owners also had this problem.

Bruce L--It was firestone that sent me on this goose chase to begin with when they did the diagnostic they found several errors and sent me away saying to buy a gas cap, get an oil change, replace the timing belt, get a tune-up....all of which Ive done except the tune-up. I of course wanted to fix everything but they couldnt pinpoint the cause of the engine light. Im told the emissiosns test people will provide me with a read-out of the errors to show my mechanc, is this true?

it's much less costly to have the problem checked and repaired by a qualified technician than to go chasing your tail when you have no idea where your tail is. there are far too many possibilities to guess.

yes it will ,when its running bad it uses more gas ,and it can trip the check engine light just on the 0-2 sensor alone ,not to mention a spark knock sensor will also trip it,and either one of these sensors may not be bad ,but when the engine isn't running like it should,it will trip the light to come on,a good basic tune up would be where i would start with repairing it,that may take care of it,it sounds like your going to have to have that part of it done anyway, and then you,ll have to get the light cleared off of it,auto zone or advance can clear the check engine light off for you, good luck hope this helps.

take it to one of those shops with a free diagnosis they tell you what the light is on for. or, just disconnect the fuse to the light. my car will have the light go on when it needs an oil change, so it could be a small fix.
