You have to use a converter to change the file type to what you want it to be. Try using DMC (Digital Media Converter) or BMP (Blaze Media Pro). I have used both of them and they work very well. DMC is easier to use, but doesn't have as many converting features as BMP.

You can probably just upload your video to YouTube and it'll be automagically converted. If you want to send the file in email, you don't have to change it. Just send the file as an attachment.

Change File Type Associations in Windows XP Step1 Click on the Start menu with your mouse or press the "Windows" button on your keyboard. Step2 Click on the "My Computer" option in the Start menu. Step3 Click on the "Tools" tab along the menu bar. Step4 Click on the "Folder Options" option. Step5 Click on the "View" tab. Step6 Make sure the "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked, so you can see the full filenames in Windows XP, including file type associations. Step7 Click "OK" and close the "Folder Options" window. Step8 Right-click on a file you wish to change. Step9 Click on the "Properties" option in the right-click context menu. Step10 Click the "Open with..." button in the "Properties" window. Note that the file may already have a file type association saved for it (it will display the icon of the associated application). Be aware that the button may be captioned "Change..." instead of "Open with...," depending on the version of Windows XP you are using. Step11 Click on an application to choose a different file type association for your selected file type. You may also click "Browse" if the application you wish to use for your new file type association is not listed. Step12 Click "OK" once you have chosen a file type association.

Youtube should just accept the file format as it is and convert it itself into flv for online usage.
Mediaconverter.org is a good one for actually converting it for yourself.
