Here's an excellent tip told me when I was a teen by a mentor: when faced with a task and unsure how to "work it" (whatever it is, in your case mopping), Ask, "How do YOU want this done HERE?"
Or: "I'd really like to see the method used by people here. I've only cleaned up at home and I want to do this right in the institutional/ professional way."
If someone mocks you, ignore them. They'll probably appreciate your willingness to learn "their way." And at the same time, you save face.
They may have an industrial mop bucket. They are large, on wheels, and have a hinge mechanism that squeezes out water (wrings out the mop strands).
At home, I always mopped with my a cleaning cloth and cleanser that was diluted with water on my hands and knees. You wet the cloth, wring it out and wipe the floor, trying to get any goo or dirt off. You'll find plenty! Next, you soak it in the cleaning solution and swish it around to get the filth off and wring it out again, repeating. (This is not done for institutional situations (as you can imagine!) The first time I used a "professional" mop bucket was at a job and I had to ask how to work the wringer. Yes, they looked at me dumb for a second but didn't make fun. I was glad I asked because they had a special "additive" for each bucket-load that sanitized as well. Otherwise, I'd have just used plain cleanser and water (like at home). So, you can see how there are differences in the way companies or schools will have regulations.
Good luck with your volunteerism!

Find mop/bucket... without one or the other you cannot mop... Get your floor cleaner(ask if you do not know what to use)... Put hot water in bucket w/ about 1/3c. of cleaner not too much or you'll leave a soapy residue on the floor DANGEROUS... NEVER mix cleaners.... Get mop put in bucket, wring mop and put mop on the floor..Start from one end of room to the next, make 2 or 3 passes with mop and put in bucket, wring and repeat... Don't mop self in corner...! If you think you used too much soap, empty mop bucket refill with water and no cleaner and repeat process.. I like to dry my floor.. but you don't have to....Good luck....

Don´t worry , we all have to start sometime. The best way to wash your floor is with a clean mop& bucket use boiling hot water, I try not to add any floor cleaner, as it leaves streaks be-hide. But you might have to use it. When you use boiling hot water, this cleans the floor´s well, the floor´s dry much quicker & you have no streak marks when the floor is dry
