The gap between one close approach of Mars to Earth and the next is not two years but 26 months. There was one on 27 August 2003, another in October 2005 and there will be one this December, 2007.

However the 2003 approach was when Mars was at perihelion (closest to the Sun) and Mars reached it peak brightness of magnitude - 2.9 seen from Earth (slightly brighter than Jupiter but not as bright as Venus).

This December Mars is near aphelion (farthest from the Sun) and will be nothing like as close to Earth as it was in 2003 and will peak at a brightness of magnitude - 1.6 seen from Earth (slightly brighter than Sirius).

A hoax e-mail purporting that Mars is at its brightest in August every year goes round every summer. Not so, its orbit is 1.88 Earth years and annual close approaches to Earth would be impossible therefore. In August 2004 and August 2006 Mars was on the far side of the Sun from us and invisible in its glare.

THE HOAX

This is what the hoax e-mail looks like:

"The Red Planet is about to be spectacular."

"Earth is catching up with Mars [for] the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history."

"On August 27th ... Mars will look as large as the full moon."

And finally, "NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN."

Those are snippets from a widely-circulated email. Only the first sentence is true. The Red Planet is about to be spectacular. The rest is a hoax.

Mars is appearing in the Sky right now. And it will still be there on August 27 too. But you are falling for the bogus message that goes around the internet every summer. That message says that Mars will be unusually close and look as big as the Moon. That is just not true. It WAS unusually close in August of 2003, but it didn't look as big as the Moon. It can never do that.

yes it is definately true that planet mars will appear in the sky
but - probably your question would be if it would appear as bright and as big as the moon ?

the answer is NO ,
mars comes closest to earth once every 2 years
and this has been repeating for a long long time and never has mars appeared as big or as bright as the moon

Mars will appear every night for a few months. It will be visible in the eastern sky around 3AM tonight, for example. To track all things celestial, try Stellarium, an awesome free program.

Mars will be in the sky throughout the summer months into fall.
As has already been mentioned, it currently rises in the early morning hours and will rise a little earlier every night.
After it disappears in the west, it will return next year.

Cool it's appearing again?? I thought it already appeared next to the moon in September last year and wouldn't be seen again for another 60,000 years. Oh well, maybe they got it wronge, it might be seeable, just look on that day or somehthing.
