I don't understand something, and maybe you can help.

I used to work in retail doing returns and exchanges in a department store. We had policies in place that kept people from bringing back items they had either damaged or would cost the store too much money to take back. I enforced these policies with EVERYONE. It didn't matter who they were. Some customers were black, and some of those (not all, but some) would throw out the line "It's because I'm black," and then proceed to indirectly call me racist, to which management would pretty much cave in and give them what they wanted and basically agree with them.

I find this very insulting and a little confusing. How is it that I can treat blacks the same way I treat everyone else and be a racist, yet some of them can look at me and assume that I'm a biggot because of my skin color, and yet I'm still the one who is wrong? I know that there are whites who are racist, but why do some think they have the right to assume I am one?

Also, i know there are scholarships for Blacks, Asians, and Mexicans. Now, I think that's great, but why is it all of a sudden "racist" when whites want to have a scholorship that is strictly for whites? Why are we being told that we can't have the same thing they do? Isn't that a little unfair?

Please understand, I am by no means racist, but I honestly don't get why these things are tolerated and I want perspective from a black person, or any other race group besides white.

QUALITY-NO-FEAR, You're right, I don't understand, which is why I posted the question to begin with so that maybe I could gain some understanding from people like you who are angry because i'm "ignorant." I find it laughable that you are rude to me for not understanding, then you tell me to shut up for asking a question that would help me to understand.

Having said that, take your own advice. Shut up. Make up your mind what you actually want from us, then you will have earned the credibility to give an answer.

LEXI0911 and KELLY4U2, Thank you for your honest answers. I really do appreciate it. As far as the scholorships, I'd like to clarify. I grew up in Lubbock and at one point there was an individual who was trying to start a scholorship for whites that would help those who were lower-class attend college. He wasn't trying to undermine these other scholorships, but he knew that there were some whites who needed these scholorships in the same way that some blacks needed the scholorships that were available just to blacks. He received cries of heresy and he was accused of racism, and the project was shut down.

I apologize for not clarifying that, and I do understand that whites, in general, are what would be considered "more priveleged." On the other hand, I do know that there are whites who do have it hard financially and need scholorships like this just as badly.

QUALITY-NO-FEAR, Edit, what "catches a nerve" is that I really can't ask an honest question without someone like you making an assumption based on what OTHERS have said or done to you in the past. Look, I realize that there are people who have posted questions like this just to bash blacks, and I truly am sorry for those idiots. The reason it catches a nerve with me is that I feel I have to defend myself to ask an honest question.

It is not nor was it ever my intent to start a "black bash." You do not know me, nor do you know why I asked the question to begin with, and I would thank you for not leaping to assumptions and accusing me of things you really have no basis to make. THAT'S why I'm annoyed with you and told you to shut up.

TERRY77, I posted the questions to BLACKS, not these idiots who came in here hurtling insults at you or your race. I am not responding to them because I know they are idiots and I am not trying to understand them, I am trying to understand YOU. As far as my remarks toward Quality-No-Fear, maybe you should actually READ what is written. She came toward me with accusations, in much the same way as you are, when all I was doing was asking a question to get insight from blacks. It didn't require assumptions or insults from either of you, and it wasn't necesarry. But I guess that doesn't matter, because I'm not "rational" enough.

Red VII hit the nail right on the head. He is right.

I am black (Not american though) myself and I seen where alot of blacks feel that they should be able to get over on the whites, just because of what their ANCESTORS were put through.

Even though racism lives on, my fellow black people should wake up and realize that slavery is over. At least from the way it used to be. They aren't satisfied that they got the freedom that they have today. Many actually abuse their freedom.

They just don't know that the way how they are acting, they are going to start slavery up all over again. It's esp. bad over here with my fellow blacks in the US.

I have always been middle ground and have always been able to see both sides of the story, I just haven't said anything about it. I'm glad that someone is finally speaking their minds about this.

It's not all blacks who do this but I have seen alot that do it, and it's making black people as a whole, look bad.

There is no point in taking revenge on any race because of what happened in the past. Hell, I, myself wasn't a slave, so why take it out on someone? There is no point in it.

Now, you have to take in consideration that alot of black people to this day, still go through racists situations and their tired of it, but alot of them do it because they are taught to think that way. However, it's NOT everyone. Alot of my fellow black people are middle ground like I am, and do not fight over race.

Racism needs to end. So does stupidity and ignorance.

Alot of people who called you racist for asking this question then bashed your race, are racists themselves. This is the reason why racism can't stop.

It's time for people to stop living in the past, and just move on. Life goes on.

As far as those irrate black customers, lets face it, there are many black people out there that use racism as a "cop out" for a bigger issue. They can't get what they want, so they claim racism because they know no one (especially whites) want to be called a racist. As a black woman I agree, it's a sad but true fact.
As far as the scholarships: Black people are the most disadvantaged socially and economically. They have been degraded and dehumaized since the beginning of US history all most. Common houerats had/have it better than blacks in some places in this country.

These blck scholarship, HBCU's (historically black colleges and universities) were developed because whites did not want blacks going to their schools. No, they did not say whites or other races could not attend, they just wanted to ensure there was a place that blacks can comfortably get the same education as everyone else in society. Those schools and scholarships are still around today because a lot of black and minorites still come economically disadvantaged families and may not be able to afford it. Face it, Whites are still the majority, and still have a bulk of the social and political power. The US STILL has a caste stystem and the whites are at the very top, while the black are trying to make their way from the bottom. Some blacks need help getting there, hence the scholarships and HBCU's. Why is it fair that the majority of the population will get even a bigger upper hand in the form of scholarships?

The black people you are dealing with have probably dealt with much blatant racial discrimination in their lifetime. It is a result of that which you will only understand if you have been victim of some sort of discrimination. I suppose you could say many blacks have been jaded. This is nothing to take personal. It is something you should try to be more understanding of however.

As far as the following comments you made: "Also, i know there are scholarships for Blacks, Asians, and Mexicans. Now, I think that's great, but why is it all of a sudden "racist" when whites want to have a scholorship that is strictly for whites? Why are we being told that we can't have the same thing they do? Isn't that a little unfair?'

You should understand that scholarships are typically geared towards helping two types of people (or a combination of the two): people who are academically deserving, and people are deserving and might not otherwise be able to afford school.

The purpose of the latter is to ensure that everyone gets a fair shot. It is understood, amongst people with higher educations, that whites are generally not underprivileged in society. Targeting races in scholarship critieria is a way of ensuring that this underserved, underrepresented, underpriviledged races get a shot at a higher education. What would be your reasoning for targeting whites? Your reasoning would be purely race related therefore defeating the purpose of the scholarship.

Overall, your problem seems to lie in not being able to admit that discrimination exists and that there are stark preferential differences in our society. Understand that and you will understand why it would be "racist" to try and make a scholarship strictly for whites. You have GOT to expand your mind. Take some sociology classes or something.

I am a Black woman, and I agree with Lexi and Kelly. Racism and prejudice will never end. That is why there is such a big stigma on the whole issue. I'm not sure, but I think there are some scholarships for whites already, you just have to look into it and find out for sure. There should be scholarships out there for everybody, so that everyone can have an equal chance of an education. As far as the store thing, I think that is a two-sided answer. There are times when blacks want to make every single thing about racism or prejudice when that is not the case at all. But there are times when it is about racism or prejudice.

You claim in this story that the customers call you a racist because of the color of your skin. Maybe you addressed them the way you are speaking on here and they saw you for what you really are. You want Black people to tell you why some Black people called you a racist. There are many questions a Black person could ask you about your corrupt.race. Even if this were true; (which it isn't)how are we supposed to answer this when we weren't there, moron. What do you want to hear? "Yea you are right Black people are racists" And for these white scum that say we use the "race card", no race complains about racism more than the white. You don't get job, it's because of affirmative action. And there isn't a White Entertainment Television, that's racism. Of course anyone is free to make an all white station, but don't let that get in the way of whining about it. You don't want an all-white station because if you had one, you wouldn't be able to complain about how racist it is that you don't have one. Is that what you and your fellow klansmen that answered this question want to hear? Great answers from red VII, ray2play, kitty, dirty sanchez and the master. You should be proud of your race! That's the scum WE have to deal with everyday on here and in real life. But we're the racists? These answers difinitively says which race has a stranglehold on racism.

First of all, it sounds as if you have a lot of issues with black people. I will answer one. I don't have a problem with white people giving scholarships. Btw, there are white scholarships that are only given to white people. No, they aren't called White scholarships, but they are only given to whites. My only concern is that ther are some people from every race that are able to go to college. There are more whites that get to go to college, so I don't feel bad that there are scholarships for blacks. Btw, I didn't receive any such scholarship. I received money from my church to buy books for one year.

It's obviously just you. You're not Black so you don't put yourself in their shoes.

Paint yourself Black and put on a fro close cropped or something and hit the retail stores, grocery stores, other clothes stores, etc., oh, and apply for mortgages on real estate, or open up a new banking account, like that.

Get back here when you're done after about a year and tell us how everything went. Until then, please shut up...please..

I'm sick of your rationalizing with your racism and implications that racism does not exist. Blah on you.

Stop with the slavery race card. Let's concentrate on the current decline in racial values and the constant hate that is ongoing today. Forget about slavery and all that crap. There's so much racism and hate in America today, you don't have to bring up the slavery bit.

I only see whites bringing up slavery and making derrogatory remarks to and about Black people when they do. Why can't whites forget about slavery and leave it in the past? Bad conscience? Blah!

Edit: Mask, will you just hush!!! You're played out and you understand very well what you're doing and what is going on. You're nothing, really...it's all been said and done so many damned times before. Get over it and paint that skin and get the fro. Again, get back to us after a year. Until then, you HUSH up...it's so redundant. CATCH A NERVE?

Sick of all this race baiting. You know exactly what you're doing, nerve catcher.

A lot of black people think this because it has been happening for 400 years and its still happening now. I have been in the situation of being in a store and being mistreated because I'm back. It has happened to me all too many times

Because it's easy to blame things on race, and since management kept giving in, people kept taking advantage. Management should have gained some backbone and applied the same rules to everyone.

I think the answer is obvious- they are trying to take advantage of you any way they can. I've done business with many blacks myself, and have observed the same behavior.
Nice how many of the black posters defend this behavior, or try to turn it around and balme the whites.

I notice Terry77 didn't even answer your question at all, he simply launched into a racist tirade. Perhaps he likes to try to return damaged items to stores as well.
