I'm a (mac) design professional looking for a career change and want to go the tech route. I want to do more network work since I figure that will get me out from behind the desk a little more.

What are the major differences? Work environment? Is microsoft more 'desktop' compared to Cisco being more large-scaled? What is the best path in your opinion?

I realize I'm going to get the Comptia network first since many of these tracks seem to have this as a prerequisite..

Microsoft is more all around network admin
Cisco is much more difficlut and specialized.
I did Microsoft first (as it is also easier than Cisco)
Actually I did Comptia, then Microsoft and now I'm working on Cisco.

I hold 3 MCSE certifications, 1 MCSA certification, A+, Linux+ and other certifications.

Salary surveys show that Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCP) learn less money than non certified people in the same fields, even though they perform the same tasks faster and better than non certified workers. There are 2 reasons for this. 1) Non certified professionals usually have more experience. 2) This experience gives them input in hiring and they are biased against MCP's.

Advanced Cisco professionals earn more than advanced Microsoft professionals. Cisco is a much more difficult certification to acquire.

Get the job before you get too many certifications. Employers look for experience 1st. Then get certified and you can either advance or change jobs.

The first certification in the Cisco series is the CCNA. It is the basics of the OSI model, switching and routing. For a professional it is probably the most important for a career in networking.

The comptia network exam is more geared towards the desktop environment.

It really depends upon what you want to do and your technical strengths.

Any certification will improve your knowledge base. Cisco and Adtran network certifications involve more training in internetworking, network links, etc than does Microsoft. If you like point to point, vpn, LAN set ups etc, go for either Cisco or Adtran.

My husband became into gazing getting his certification. the biggest situation with turning out to be qualified is that it expenses approximately $2 hundred for the try, and it expires each and every 3 years. this could upload up somewhat directly. in case you have the money to spare, certification seems solid. It shows which you do no longer concepts making an investment earnings your self so as to make money. In a lot of colleges, you may get scholarships and provides you which will make your preparation extra precious. he's getting his friends degree in some 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. His pc instructor is between the final in the rustic. He advised my husband that whilst certification seems super, this is no longer continuously sufficient to set you aside. i could get the degree first, and in case you have the money to spare, get qualified on ideal of that.
