To too many people, a real career is defined by the amount of incoming dollars. Art for art's sake does not pay the rent, does not buy food, does not pay the electric bill or pay for clothes, which is the primary reason for a career or paying job. In order for people to accept art as a real career, you have to show them the money. That's just the way it is.

First, be clear in your mind why "it" should be taken seriously and why "it" is a real career. Just because you like it isn't enough. You might be wrong. Think about it. Once you're clear in your own head, examine how your life is enriched by the pursuit of "it". Find ways to demonstrate, not preach, "its" value. And why do you need to "inspire others"? Your work will either speak for itself or it won't. If you have a specific audience that you're trying to reach, you may have to tailor your message to the audience because you can't remake the audience to suit your message.

what is a "career"? explain to them that the purpose of a career is to earn a living. wearing a suit and tie to work doesn't make it a career. if you perform a function and you are paid to perform that function and you can live off of the earnings from the function you perform...that is a career. i would explain to them that there are few people in this world that can actually say that they are doing something that they love for a living and that their passion has translated into their livelyhood. what an honor and privilage that would be. in a more practical sense i would encourage people to visit art schools, museums, ect.ect. and see real people who are making a living through their art. this world is full of people who do not follow their dreams because it is not practical or conventional or it's not what their parent's would want for them. the bottom line is your life belongs to you, and it's up to you to make it work.
