Plumbers. In the old days, there was only cold water, usually a pump, and you inveriably worked it with your dominant hand, the right. When indoor plumbing became the vogue, it fell to the right being the cold since that was what people had come to expect, while hot is on the left (the least dominant and therefore not turned on unexpectedly).

I don't know but right handed scissors are red and sometimes left handeds are blue. I noticed. On one of the taps in my house the cold tap is on the left. So not on some but I noticed on most.

It's not always that way...it's just the standard method of doing it since the earliest days of indoor plumbing. If you dislike this, it's simple to switch your pipes over to the opposite handles. It's a process that takes about 3 minutes and will confuse people forever.
You should try it, it's funny when your friends burn their hands in the "cold" water.

I think that may differ in other countries, but even in the US it's not always the way you've described. If the plumber screws up, you'll not only have the hot where the cold should be and vice versa, you'll get a steam bath each time you sit on the toilet!

By god your right! Now why is that? Can someone please answer now I'm dying to know, i know let me call the old man he may know! Damn the hubby didn't know either. But he did say that once they, who ever they are, put the cold on the right they left it that way cause that is what people know. Lets all try calling a plumber first one who gets right answer wins 10 points.... On your mark get set GO LOL have a great weekend all my cyber friends :O

This is because most of the population is right handed. We use cold water more often than hot. Also, we tend to turn it on first, so if we need warm water, we turn on the cold, then the hot, so we avoid being burned.
It's genious!
What a great question. Makes us think ;) Thanks.

It is a psyoligical thing most people are right handed and will reach for the right side and not get burnt by the hot water, and it drives me nuts when they reverse it.

It's a good thing too.
I stayed in an apartment once where it was reversed, I can't tell you how difficult it was to adjust and how many times I got a big surprise.
