I say do your research first. Get all the information on what it takes to be an actor before taking it to mom and dad and figure out if this is really what you want or if it's just a passing fascination with fame. It takes lots of support and money to start. You need acting classes and workshops. You should get involved in theatre. Possibly singing and dance classes. You need to be driven to all your classes and rehearsals. If you want to take it further and get an agent you'll need headshots so you need to find a photographer, a photo copying place, lots of envelopes and stamps to send out your headshots to potential agents, oh and you need to write a cover letter stating that you're seeking representation with that agency (at least you are literate and wrote everything correctly above!!!). Once you get an agent you need to make sure mom (or someone) is on board with dropping everything to drive you to auditions. Where do you live? You may have to move if you're not in a place where much is happening in tv and film. Many people flock to Los Angeles every year for pilot season. Others prefer Broadway and move to NY. A lot of filming happens in Toronto too, but they usually cast those films in Los Angeles... Of course you can start locally. But depending on your locations, films and tv shows can be few and far between. That's your potential future in a nutshell :-)

Start at the begining. Find the classes and local theatres. Tell your parents you'd like to do a play and take a class and see where that gets you. That in itself is a lot because rehearsals can be every night until late, it's quite a commitement. Plus the class will be an additional hour or two... And of course you'll have to learn to balance all of that with your school work. If you can do all that and keep your grades up then try adding another activity or moving on to a student film or something else. I honestly believe your parents will respect your choice more if you show responsibility in your actions (ie doing your research, keeping your grades up, getting to your activities on time, calling them when you're going to be late, show responsibility!)

Good luck ;-)

You shouldn't. At this point you don't really want to be an actor. You want what you perceive to be an actor's lifestyle. Do a small part in a small theatre first. See if you like not being cast over and over again. Or, see if you like being cast and then being told in great detail why what you're doing is wrong by someone who isn't as smart or talented as you are. Or being really talented and well trained and still seeing roles you're perfect for going to a trained monkey who used to be on a sitcom. Or discovering a depth of meaning to your life that can only be discovered in sharing the entire range of the human condition to an appreciative audience. Then tell your parents you want to be an actor.

Both of these people above posted fine answers. I'd just like to add that don't try to go too far too fast. Start slow with small community theater plays and then work your way up. Cheers!
