It's like my brain shut down when it came to math when I was 12. It was always a struggle before then, and nearly impossible afterwards. I just barely got by with the help of a lot of tutors. Anyone else mathematically retarded?

Do you have any issues with logical thinking? The reason I bring that up is that the arithmetic that is commonly considered mathematics is not really at the heart of mathematics. It is nothing but basic rules and a lot of memorization. ADD (and similar) folks struggle a great deal with arithmetic but are not necessarily fundamentally limited in real mathematical learning. Mathematics is reasoning, a primal distinction of human beings. We evolved with this inate ability. Some people shut themselves down through anxiety and never realize their human potential in this all.

Let me guess. You may well have come from a male dominated family ... or ... let's see ... 12 .... what happens to a girl at 12 ... oh yeah ... puberty.

It's very common for girls to lose interest in uncool subjects like Maths (yes that's the way we say it here - it IS a plural you know :)) and Chemistry when they discover boys or even start confronting odd things like periods rather than periodic tables.

Hint: (if you were any good at it before puberty) Stop referring to yourself as a mathematical retard and pull out a book from Grade 6 and start having a go at the questions if it bugs you. Any good library should have some basic mathSSSSS books :-). You willl defeat a demon that's obviously important enough to string a few words together for!! (And mathS is actually fun if you have the right questions to answer)

I observed that mostly 3/4 of high school students in the classes which I attended had struggled with math, too good that the instructors were very patient.
But math was my favorite subject. I felt comfortable with it.
Don't worry, practice makes perfect, you can stimulate your brain by continuously solving mathematical problems, simple first then to the complicated level, I'm sure you'll get good results. Think that your brain won't shut down, think that you can solve math easily. I can't take the word "retarded." Everybody has the capacity to count and it needs practice to solve mathematics easily and fast.

It is never too late to try. You now have an advantage in any class you take competing with 19 year olds.

I'm good at math, but lousy at other things, it is just how the brain works in strange ways.

Remember that everyone has areas of strength and weakness!! Smart isn't just for math and english. It's also for sports, music, art, social skills, etc. I wouldn't get down that you're not brilliant at math. Many people aren't. Look at yourself and see what things you are strong at. :)

You are not alone on this. Being math challenged is more common that you would believe.

no, unlike you, we don't make excuses for why we can't do something we don't like to do. you should have paid more attention in class instead of passing notes and twirling your hair.
