Here's what i do, when i was younger i learn that certain word can't hurt you if you know the true meaning of the word.
For example;
Dyke - An embankment of earth and rock built to prevent floods
So if you know what they really mean YOU can blow it off and if you want you can make it your own because you have educated yourself about it.
Queer means; strange or odd from a conventional viewpoint; unusually different
Personally i don't mind it at all.

I use it to describe myself sometimes. I hate the word lesbian, I just don't like how it sounds or something. It just turns me off. Queer just seems to have a richer meaning, and it pisses so many more people off!
But usually I say I'm a gay grrl.

ugh I hate that word. I find it as offensive as Ni*** its an ugly word that should never be used in any instance. Just like the word D Y K E ugh I hate those words. Its sooo ugly. IF any ones uses these words around me or at me....its make me lower my opinion about them and maybe even not talk to them. I totally agree with you.....It bothers me too. Ugly words.

according to the Dictionary it means [ odd, questionable character, faint or out of sorts ]. i have never like the word and tried to teach my children never to use it or call anyone Q.
Use to tell the kids a Q---- they are people you do things that are not normal. And that gays will not hurt you. They are more friendly then normal people...

I disagree with Tegarst. I don't think it's anything to laugh at. In my opinion laughing reinforces the wrong attitude to portray to children. I think the word is cold and cruel and children or adults who use it in todays world should be treated with the same disdain as Imus was treated for calling the Rutgers girls basketball team nappy headed ho's.

How could a gay person be against it when there's an entire group of gays who go under the banner 'Queer Nation'?

I use the word to mean odd or weird. To me it really doesn't denote an insult unless it's voiced that way in a hostile tone. Of course, I also live in a small town and not in a larger city. Perhaps that in itself might make a difference. Good luck, Dearest.
