Sadly, you can experience the side effects until it has completely cleared from your system. This could take 6-8 months, but up to more than a year.
I didn't bleed the entire time I was on the shot, but I had all kinds of other side effects I hated (weight gain, hair loss, break-outs, moodiness, and loss of sex drive). My friend did bleed the entire time she was on it, though. It took her 4 months after she was due for her next shot (7 months total) to stop bleeding.

I was on Depo, and it sounds very similar to what was happening to me. Depo messes your periods up, and since it can stay in your system for months even after your first missed shot, I wouldn't worry.

Its effectiveness as a contraceptive is only as high as it needs to be for 3 months. Doesn't mean that the hormone isn't around in your body longer! If it continues, talk to your doc, but if it was actually caused by the Depo shot, they couldn't do too much but let the halflife run its course.

i was on the depo shot and i hated it i got real bloated and other side effects. like my hair started falling out and was real moody all the time it wasn't something i would wish on my worst enemy. but it usally lasted for about 4-5 months but once it stops you don't have a period for ever and your whole world chances. then after you stop taking it it can take up to a year to start having periods again

Yup, its normal. One of the horrible side affects of the shot that some women get. Others are lucky enough to not get a period at all, only spotting at odd times and other negative side affects.
Are you getting it again? I hope not! (its every 12 weeks you get it, and it sounds like you are way overdue)

I had lots of problems on that shot. I had to get off, my body thought it was going thru menapose. I would bleed for two weeks between shots. Finally I gave it up.

I have heard mostly negative feedback about Depo, not much positive. Actually, any type of hormone birth control is not good.
