It was cigars not cigarettes. He did not believe his own theories of oral fixation applied to himself. A famous quote:
"Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar"- Freud
He smoked them because he enjoyed them. He gave this explanation to his nephew Harry:
"smoking is one of the greatest and cheapest enjoyments in life, and if you decide in advance not to smoke, I can only feel sorry for you" -Freud [this cheap enjoyment eventually cost him his life]
I have other theories of my own, but "If I was Sigmund Freud" these are the explanations I would (and did) give.

Freud smoked cigars, not cigarettes. He smoked about 20 a day. It cost him dearly: several cancers. He eventually died (at 83) of cancer.
His addiction was to nicotine, which is a strong addictive substance.
He might be classified as an Oral receptive personality.
The Oral receptive personality is preoccupied with eating/drinking and reduces tension through oral activity such as eating, drinking, smoking, biting nails. They are generally passive, needy and sensitive to rejection. They will easily 'swallow' other people's ideas.
Take it easy and have a nice day.

You mean cigars. At the time he lived, it was common to retire to the drawing room after dinner for cigars and brandy. He would be following the practice of polite society. The nicotine in the tobacco is very addictive, going to the same area of the brain as heroin. That gives you the continuation of the habit that eventually killed him.
Why are you picking on my first cousin, a few times removed?
