Normally, coffee does totally oposite. Drinking coffee can make you very alert and wide awake. However, there is more than one answer here. The first is "Instant Coffee". Instant Coffee is high in "Caffeine" and can be addictive. Many coffee drinkers suffer headaches when they need a "Caffeine" fix. Next is roast coffee beans or ground coffee beans. These products are not very fresh and are lower in "Caffeine" as the coffee loses some during the perculation / filtration process. Next are fresh coffee beans, which are usually slightly higher in "Caffeine" than the old packaged coffee. Finally, there are the Ethiopian coffee beans. Although they contain "Caffeine" some other natural chemical neutralises the "Caffeine" and therefore it can be drank like water with no problems with sleep. The best of the Ethiopian beans are the Arabica beans. Fresh roasted and ground beans make a lovely cup of coffee before bed. The Ethiopian bean is technically "naturally decaffinated" and it can be used in a relaxing atmosphere whereas other coffees will get a person agitated.

Depends on the amount of caffeine, the mix, the temperature, and the frequency of taking the drink. Honestly, tea is better.
